India Pharma Outlook and Latest News – Pharmaceutical Industry in India
India’s pharmaceutical industry is one of the world’s largest, ranking third globally by volume and 14th by value, with a market valued at approximately $60 billion. Known as the “Pharmacy of the World,” India provides around 40% of the generic medicines consumed in the United States and produces more than 50% of the world’s vaccines.
The Indian pharma sector is projected to grow 9–11% in FY2026, driven by strong domestic demand of 8–10% and robust European market expansion of 15–17%, while US growth slows to 4–6% due to price erosion and regulatory challenges. Operating profit margins remain stable at 24–25% supported by favorable raw material costs and rising specialty product share, with R&D spending at 6–7% of revenues focused on complex molecules and innovation. The industry is transitioning from volume-led supply to value-driven global partnerships, moving from “World’s Pharmacy” to “World’s Innovation Partner,” as exports hit a record $30+ billion in FY25 (+9.4% over FY24). With $250 billion worth of innovator drugs going off patent over the next 5 years, significant opportunities exist for generics and complex products, backed by government support of Rs. 5,268 crore for the Department of Pharmaceuticals and GST exemptions on select medicines.
India Pharma Monitor is designed as a centralized platform to track these developments efficiently. It curates key updates across regulatory changes, market trends, export activity, research advancements, and industry movements in a structured format. The aim is to offer readers a clear and reliable overview of the Indian pharmaceutical landscape, enabling quicker insights, easier comparison, and better-informed understanding of the sector.
